HEAL Schuyler (Preventing Obesity)
Schuyler County is above the state average for the rate of overweight adults and children. Health data from the 2012 “County Health Rankings & Roadmaps” shows that 28% of adult residents in Schuyler County are overweight. This shows a 2% yearly increase in adult obesity statistics since 2010. These factors rank Schuyler County as 34 out of 62 in NY for Health Issues. Obesity is directly connected to a variety of short and long term health problems. Obesity increases healthcare and other costs leading to a shorter life span.

HEAL Recipe Contest Winners Announced
HEAL Schuyler received 8 recipes this summer during our recipe contest. The HEAL Schuyler Committee prepared all the recipes and tasted them at our September meeting. The recipes were judged on taste, whether they met the gold standard for Choose HEALth and whether they used some local ingredients. Every recipe was enjoyed by at least one committee member making difficult to decide winners. The committee had a hard time deciding the 2nd and 3rd place winners, so a new category “ease of preparing the recipe” was added as criteria to break the tie. The winners are:
• 1st. Charred Broccoli with Chickpeas by Betty Denardo
• 2nd. Sweet Potato and Ginger Garlic Soup by Tami Ellis
• 3rd. Zesty Corn and Mixed Bean Salad Sandwich by Pam Cicconi
• Honorable Mention– Vindaloo Vegetables by Nan Woodworth
The HEAL Schuyler Committee thought that the Charred Broccoli with Chickpeas was a great substitute for the traditional broccoli salad and the fact that it could be served cold or warm was a delight. This year’s winners will receive prizes from Watkins Glen KOA, Seneca Thrills, UR Medicine Healthy Living Program, Selah Yoga and Music and Ranger Outfitters in Corning NY. All the recipes that were entered into the contest and their nutrition information is posted on the HEAL Schuyler website at the following link: http://www.schuylercounty.us/641/Eating-Healthy-in-Schuyler-County
Our goal is to reduce the rate of adult obesity in Schuyler County to less than the NYS average of 25% (2012-2013). This will be done by the end of 2018 and will be measured by the County Health Rankings & Roadmaps.
HEAL Schuyler is supporting environmental changes that promote healthier eating and active lives for the people
of Schuyler County.
